I know this question might be come out as offensive to some few persons mostly the professional music managers – my apologies but with the structural limitation the industry has been built upon, I guess it is right questions are being asked mostly for enlightenment purposes.
“An artiste manager, also known as a talent manager, band manager or music manager, is an individual or company who guides the professional career of artistes in the entertainment industry. The responsibility of the talent manager is to oversee the day-to-day business affairs of an artiste; advise and counsel talent concerning professional matters, long-term plans and personal decisions which may affect their career.”
The above definition makes hiring an artiste manager very important to building or sustaining a successful career as an artiste. Individuals like Fola Folayan, Godwin Tom and others have it a made a selfless act to educate artistes on the need of employing the services of an experienced manager.
Artiste management is broken into multiple roles to include: PR, Bookings, Business Management, A&R, Tour Management and even Personal Assisting. Most times, one individual assumes all the duties leading to deficiency in some roles and subsequently on the artiste’s career growth. While it can be argued not many emerging artistes can afford the running costs of an experienced manager, they could strike a deal with one of them, although the possibility of that working lies in the faith the manager has in the artiste and the honesty of the artiste. An example of such case is Wizkid and Osagie.
As a usual practice in the Nigeria Music Industry, most artistes upon recognition through the efforts of a seasoned manager move on an get an errand boy to handle their management which is totally wrong.
The big question now is: “What Do Nigeria Artiste’s Managers Really Do seeing that the industry has been structured into operating a DIY by the artiste.”
Should artiste management be scrapped with focus on just bookings and possible endorsements by corporate brands knowing fully well that’s what interests artistes these days?
