If you’re acquainted with Nigerian fashion and social media, then Ifeanyi should be no stranger to you. He and his brother Emeka are very easy to spot at events with their quirky and stylish ensembles. We always wondered what he does and then… BAM! His “Control” collection was splattered all over our computer screens with its launch in April 2014.
Catering to menswear, his label I.N was a welcome addition to Nigeria’s fashion industry. His new “Timeless” collection is wearable, features shirts with high-low hems, cowl details and combines prints with solid colors+. We think it’s about time we get to know the creative force behind the I.N brand. Tush Magazine’s Stephen had an interview session with him, below is an excerpt from the interview.
WHO IS IFEANYI NWUNE?
Ifeanyi Nwune is a Menswear designer, image consultant and product designer. I’m in my final year at Covenant University studying Electrical Engineering.
HOW DID THE IFEANYI NWUNE BRAND COME ABOUT?
As an image consultant, I needed some pieces that I couldn’t find with the other brands I worked with at that time. So I decided to design them myself. Putting all the designs under one roof, I made it a brand.
WHAT IS THE I.N BRAND ABOUT?
I.N is pretty much about “dopeness”. It’s a brand that I created to make people appreciate the beauty of art in clothing and also life in general.
WHAT DOES A GOOD DESIGN MEAN TO YOU?
A good design is a coordinated statement piece. Notice I said “coordinated”. If all the elements are not coordinated, it won’t make any sense. A bad design is noise, while a good design is music for the soul.
WHAT KIND OF MAN ARE YOUR DESIGNS FOR?
My designs are pretty much for every man. I try to touch every aspect, every kind of man, before I create my collection. My designs are a little eccentric but are very interesting.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
I’m working on a lot in fashion and product design. My fashion film, “Timeless Fashion Film” is coming also. I’m also doing a reality TV show, Image consultancy, at the moment. I’m preparing a new hat collection and also a new menswear collection; also doing image consultancy with a couple of music artists at the moment. There is a lot to be expected from the brand to be honest, just wait on it.
I have no personal style. I’m very versatile and unorthodox when selecting an ensemble.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU?
Nothing specific. I like to be productive on a daily basis. Do something, at least one little thing, that will take me towards my dream.
THOUGHTS ON THE NIGERIAN FASHION INDUSTRY
I think it’s a fast growing industry. Creatives are thinking more and there is a lot more competition.
FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT FASHION DESIGN?
I love seeing the finished product after it has been sewn. I love the colour red and I love wool.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS?
Maison Martin Margiela, Public School NYC, Rick Owens, Givenchy!
WOULD YOU EVER DO WOMENSWEAR?
Not in clothing, but maybe accessories, Yes.
WHAT DOES YOUR FAMILY THINK?
They are very supportive. I feel like you get support in whatever you do as long as it’s productive in the right direction.
DID YOU ATTEND FASHION SCHOOL, DO YOU THINK IT’S COMPULSORY?
I didn’t go to a fashion school, but I plan to. I think it’s very compulsory for every designer to be open to learn.
IF YOU COULD RAID ANY NIGERIAN CELEBRITY’S CLOSET, WHOSE WOULD IT BE?
CELEBRITIES YOU’D LOVE TO STYLE?
Asap Rocky and Kanye West
WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE ICONS OF ALL TIMES?
Asap Rocky and Ugo Mozie
