Let me officially welcome you to 2022! Last year saw a lot of amazing fashion trends despite the ominous clouds that came with the previous year. The world was eager to catch up on all the fashion that was missed out on in 2020 due to the lockdown. Although the gloomy cloud of COVID has seeped into 2022, with new variants springing up, the fashion tastemakers have come with a mission to shake us out of the grey days and bring us into a season of vibrant colours.
The nostalgic feeling that we have felt from fashion trends of previous years continues into this year. With Y2K fashion at an all-time high, the new year has plenty of entertaining trends in store for the next resurgence wave. Vibrant colours and designs, as well as dramatic styles like bubble dresses, volume tops, cutouts galore, and ultra-low rises on pants and skirts, are stealing the show. Accessories are not left out either; think big platforms, bright purses, and a more-is-more jewellery approach that combines beads and pearls.
Let’s dive into the trends for 2022:
Pantone, a New Jersey-based institute widely regarded as the global authority on colour, has named a Color of the Year every year since 2000. Pantone has announced its colour of the year for 2022, Very Peri, which it defines as a “dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone.” Pantone 17-3938, Very Peri, is a colour that encourages courageous creativity and personal inventiveness.
Other colours purported for the year are shades of purple, violet, lavender and saffron, which have been spotted in stores.
Our purses are coming to life with a burst of bright and vibrant colours. Orange, pink, yellow, green, and bright blue are just a few hues on the rainbow-bright bag trend.
Leggings are not going anywhere in 2022. They remain a versatile pair of bottoms that can be styled in ways other than lounging or working out. This year they come in vibrant colours and eye-catching patterns.
Dresses and tops retain their volume in 2022, with oversized shirting, ballooned silhouettes, and a continuation of the puff sleeve trend.
Chunky Soles; Shoes/Boots/Sneakers
The year 2022 is all about chunky soles. From sky-high heels to flatform designs, loafers, ankle-strap heels, boots, and even clogs have been amplified for a retro-inspired boost.
Low-Rise Pants and Skirts
The low-rise pant trend made an appearance last year and was seen on models like GiGi Hadid. The low-slung pant and micro-mini skirt, which dip below the belly button, are back in full force this year.
Crop tops have been back on the fashion trends for a while now and they are not going anywhere. The bra has officially reached “real top” status, Whether dressing comfortably or making a bold statement for a night out, a bra or crop top will do the trick. Try layering it under a shacket or oversize blazer for balance.
Maxi and Midi Skirts and Dresses
Long flowing dresses and skirts, and dresses and skirts that stop below the knee, are among the trends to look out for this year. Although many are not over the moon about this trend, with the right accessories and styling, the outfits can be elevated to look elegant and sophisticated.
Corsets, pearls, lady cardigans, and prim florals will continue to be popular in 2022. For sophisticated events such as work or a party, embrace this trend of head-to-toe elegance.
If 2022 proves anything, it will be that skin is still in, and artfully placed cutouts on dresses, tops and even the occasional low-rise bottom will remain as part of the Aughts 2.0 fashion wave.
