It’s been a few weeks since the release of the highly anticipated season of Castle & Castle and it has exceeded all our expectations. The debut season of the legal drama was released in the early summer of 2018. Being the first of its genre in the Nigerian Film and TV industry, it was easy to gain a substantial amount of curiosity from its local and global audience. Although the first season was relatively new content for the Nigerian audience, EbonyLife really outdid themselves with the overall production. I kept asking myself while watching it sometime in 2020 “Why isn’t anyone talking about this show???” It’s clear Mo Abudu and her team made sure season 2 would be one for the books.
Castle & Castle is a legal-drama series about a prestigious Lagos law firm, ‘Castle & Castle’, run by Remi Castle (Dakore Akande) and Tega Castle (Richard Mofe-Damijo). The drama series gives insight to the ups and downs of the Nigerian legal sphere. The series is also made up of some of the finest talents in the industry including Blossom Chukwujekwu, Daniel Etim Effiong, Ade Laoye, Denola Grey and Eku Edewor amongst other recurring cast members.
It’s an indisputable fact that the cast brought their A game to this season. It’s been impressive watching these actors get a little more comfortable in their role, while also stepping out of their comfort zones to give a great performance. Compared to the preceding season, there’s apparent improvement in performance by the actors.
The writing for this season is more three-dimensional, in the sense that there are more layers to each character, plot and backstory. It’s easy to forget that this season only has six episodes, owing to the fact that each episode is packed with enough plots and subplots to keep the audience satisfied after every episode. On the flip side, some of the subplots felt dragged out and rather unnecessary. For instance Ben’s phase as an executive producer. It’s understandable that the whole bit there was to build up to a second blackmail, at the same time it felt too stretched out and could have been built up using another plot line.
Can we get some commotion for the costumes? Because they were nothing but fabulous. All the characters this season were on their A game when it came to costume. I caught myself several times fawning over some of the outfits the characters had on. The head of wardrobe really outdid themselves this time, which is ridiculous because the first season also had topnotch costume design.
It’ll be easy to go on and on about how each department absolutely outdid themselves this season but that rant is for another day. It’s saturday today, that means there’s more than enough time this weekend to binge watch the second season of Castle & Castle on netflix.
