This week we feature beauty influencer Olanrewaju Mariam Eniola in our micro-influencer spotlight section. Olanrewaju Mariam is a 21-year-old gen-z beauty influencer. She is currently a 3rd-year medical student at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Even though Mariam is currently pursuing a profession in medicine, she has always been a fan of makeup since she was a child. So it’s no surprise that she’s also a beauty influencer.

In this interview, Mariam shares her journey into life as an influencer and lets us in on some trade secrets and advice for influencers who are just starting their journey.

Mariam learned how to apply makeup on her own. At the age of 13, she began watching YouTube makeup tutorials. She initially started creating beauty content for fun and the love of it; until brands started approaching her, and she decided to take it more seriously. Mariam’s experience depicts how your hobby can become a source of income for you.

Her makeup looks are so creative that we had to find out how she comes up with such unique ideas. She responds, “most of the time, I just throw things together and come up with something lovely. At least, that’s what I try to do.” Mariam hasn’t had to worry about securing influencer gigs because brands have been reaching out to her directly thanks to her engaging content. When we asked her what brands she couldn’t work with, she said this. “The only brands I can’t work with are those that sell items I can’t use, such as aphrodisiacs.”

Mariam has worked with brands such as; @bishhbeauty, @beautybyjoms, @otglam. When tasked with creating content for brands, Mariam gets inspiration from fellow creatives and tweaks it a bit to show her style. She adds, “but when I invent a look, I just go with the flow at that moment.” Her 3 favourite apps for content creation are Capcut & Inshot (for videos) and Snapseed (for pictures).

This beauty creative says the most important makeup products needed for someone who wants to start as a beauty influencer are:

  • Moisturizer
  • Primer
  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Brow pencils
  • Powder
  • Mascara
  • Lipstick/Gloss

Her current makeup tips are to make sure your skin prep is top notch to ensure a good base, and she uses powder over her primer before foundation to make the makeup last longer. Mariam shoots her makeup videos on an iPhone 7+ using natural lighting. She shares two tips she’s learned so far in terms of content creation: I’d say film with your back camera and use the “Sharpness” option in your editing apps. It gives great quality!

Mariam is a commercial mobile MUA, a social media manager, and a middle woman for businesses in addition to being a medical student and a beauty influencer. What a multi-talented individual!

Before letting her go, we asked Mariam to share some advice for potential influencers going into her niche. “Put out that video you’re not sure about… Take your time, and at the same time, don’t waste it. Don’t expect anyone to help you; go out there and help yourself. Also, don’t cheat your way to the top (don’t buy followers/likes/views). Your time will come.”
