Born in the mid 90’s in the city of Lagos, Jekein Lato-Unah is a budding 21st-century artist and currently a third-year law student at the University of Lagos. “O.J” or “Juicy” as she is fondly called has been art inclined for as long as she can remember with influences from her mother.

Jekein attended and graduated from the International School, Lagos where she was one of the best art students and the Creative Director of the Junior Achievement Nigeria group in her senior year.

She dedicates her work to art movements like Fauvism, Abstract Expressionism, Art Brut and Conceptual Art.

She is not afraid to push boundaries, she is always looking to explore and test the pretentious moral compass of her people – Nigerians. Looking at some of her pieces, it is brutally obvious she draws inspiration from accomplished artists like Bruce Onabrakpeya, Francis Alÿs, Henry Darger, Sofonisba Anguissola, Georges Seurat, to name a few.

Her certificate in Painting and Photo Reproduction Painting was received from Arts Basis Institute, Dubai. Subsequent to that she attended an intensive Art program at Campos Art Dubai where she was also an assistant gallery manager at the XVA Gallery in Dubai.

Jekein studied under Jelili Atiku at the Goethe-Institut for a Performance Art atelier in November 2016. There, she absorbed the acute attention to create and confuse associated with Atiku’s spontaneous creativity, which led her to refine her own visual and conceptual analysis. Subsequently, Atiku organized a Performance Art Exhibition at the Art House Foundation Residency of which she was the Art Director.

Jekein’s work can be found in the myriad of public and private art collections both in Lagos, Delta, Kaduna and Abuja.

In her spare time, Jekein is a writer, performance artist, nudist, and an unconventional photographer.

Below are some of her works:
