In recent time, Saturday’s evenings on radio hasn’t been the same with lots of listeners within Nigeria looking forward to hearing the lovely and captivating voice of Kemi Smallz; this can be confirmed by the many call-ins and requests across social media and you cannot but marvel at the charming prowess of this young lady.

Standing 5ft tall with a surprisingly smallish figure one can be envy of – given the many free privileges she gets and goes away with, Kemi Smallz is an on air personality at City FM 105.1 whom has successfully created a wide listenership base with her live radio show tagged “WeekendLounge” which airs every Saturday between the hours of 4 – 6pm.

Born twenty-four years ago to Nigerian parents as the first child and daughter out of five kids, Oluwakemi Itare Otabemi has her roots in the western part of Nigeria, Ondo State to be precise but lived all her life in Lagos having her educational studies from Nursery to University level all in Lagos. Right from a young age, young Kemi had always pictured herself as a talk show host and being born into an art loving family, her parents gave all the support and encouraged her with no limit.

Her journey into the world of presenting started during her days in University of Lagos where she studied English Language. Without any formal training, Kemi taught herself the ethics of radio broadcasting at quite an early stage by listening to veterans such as Ik (Wild Child), JAJ de Mecadon, Shola Thompson, and watching a lot of TV talk show programs. After school, she went on and participated in the second edition of MTV BASE VJ SEARCH and emerged amongst the top three finalists. Participating in the VJ search competition got the ball rolling for Kemi as she took advantage of the opportunities the platform offered her even though she didn’t win.

Before the competition, through the help of a friend she joined City FM hosting an independent show called “Night Life in Radio” – a program that talks about the night life and happenings in Lagos. She then left just in time for the competition and after the competition; City FM absorbed her in as a staff. She co-hosted a hip-hop show with K-Show amongst a couple of other shows and eventually got her own personal show – The Weekend Lounge which is a call-in program where the listener gets the opportunity of selecting any song.

Hinting her success on her personality she describes as “happy and real”. Kemi is one ever bubbly person and meeting with her confirms so; it is this persona she represents all the time and tries to live by but then of course there are the bad days for her which she inevitably can’t shy away from.
