The 2020/2021 premier league season has been nothing short of a revelation for the Super Eagle’s star – Kelechi Iheanacho. Having struggled to earn a permanent starting berth in Leicester’s first team since his £25 million move from Manchester City in the summer of 2017, many have come to wonder if the demons of his turbulent playing time at the later end of his spell on the blue side of Manchester have come to haunt him. Of course playing alongside one of the deadliest sharpshooter in the Premier League – Jamie Vardy, the young Nigerian striker was not really expected to be the main man [not as long Vardy was still running the show]. Nevertheless, one would reckon that his potential should sufficiently put him in the limelight on a couple of occasions.
Having started only two of Leicester’s first twenty games, it seemed that this was yet another season to forget for “senior man”. In a strange turn of events, fortune smiled on the Nigerian Star was afforded a run of games, largely due to injuries to key first team players. Capitalizing fully on the opportunity, he showed his true colors in such a spectacular fashion that left the Foxes’ manager – Brendan Rogers eulogizing him. Between March and April 2021, he went on a run of 12 goals in 10 consecutive games in all competition; scoring his first Premier League hat trick against Sheffield United, and a brace against Manchester United in the quarter final of the FA cup. All of these contributed to him winning the Premier League player of the month in March 2021 – the first in his career, after scoring 5 goals in 3 league appearances. As a reward for his efforts, the club offered him a 3-year contract to keep him with the Foxes until 2024. Another fine goal in the FA cup quarterfinal match against Southampton must have given the “Big Goons” at Leicester City a good reason to smile.
The Foxes’ FA Cup triumph over Chelsea – the first in the club’s history, highlights the fine season they had, and it is needless to say that the success of Leicester City can be greatly attributed to the re-emergence of Kelechi Iheanacho.
