Growing up in the late ’90s, I remember wearing a lot of denim on denim, and it wasn’t taboo! Back then, wearing denim on denim or a complete denim look was cool and acceptable. It was also fashionable in 2001 when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake made an unforgettable red carpet appearance in matching all-denim outfits. In 2016 denim-on-denim was a popular trend with celeb and bloggers alike paring true-blue separates. So much so that at the 2016 VMA’s, Katy Perry and Riff Raff paid tribute to the iconic red carpet outfits worn by “Timberbit” by wearing a slightly updated take.

However, prior to the late ’90s, it was considered a taboo and fashion faux-pas. I wonder why though because the recent all-denim looks I’ve been seeing on social media makes me wanna dig up my old denim jackets and wear them with crop tops or bodysuits and denim pants! I first took notice of a denim-on-denim look in July during the summertime. @alex_unusual, an ex-Big Brother Nigeria housemate, wore a denim crop top with flare denim pants, and the look was very chic!

Since then, I’ve spotted several other fashion influencers who have worn this understated trend and look great in it. I thought it was a passing phase, but it seems to be slowly getting around, as more and more people are embracing this comeback.

Here are some of our favourite denim-on-denim looks we’ve spotted, which can serve as inspiration for when you decide to hop on this trend.
