Have you ever wondered why some artists take a 3-4 year hiatus from music, and still retain their spot when they return? They saw the need to go refill their creative juice, hence, the break. Perhaps you haven’t realized that creative run out if ideas at a certain time in their career if they keep doing the same thing over and over again.

I’m not going to bore you with the definition of a content. So I will just plunge right into it. Content simply means the idea that gives life to a body of work. Ever wondered why those in the entertainment world pay so much for this life wire (content)…this can never be overemphasized.

Music as an art is as old as mankind. Right from the days of Adam and Eve, down to their descendants: Abraham, David etc. The content that held the music of the yesteryears together ranged from happenings all around the society. Artists of those epochs were sensitive about their surroundings, making music from harp, cymbal, flute and other stringed instruments. Happenings in war, carnival, voyage, and other relatable events are told and retold to people – Beowulf, Iliad just to mention a few.

Ballad was the first kind of storytelling in music. This narrative was birthed in the 13th century, England. It has metamorphosed into other kinds of narrative such as spoken words and rap.

Few artists in Nigeria who are good in the art of music through storytelling have doused themselves in the pool of creativity, towered above their counterparts.  From the big guns of music in the Western world (Beyoncé, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Lady Gage etc), to our indigenous artists (late Fela, Asa, Brymo, Simi, Falz, Nonso Amadi, etc), this art has come to stay for good. And that is why artists like Asa would always have a place in the world of music despite being away for five years, and came back with her fourth studio album, Lucid, which tells the tale of the brokenhearted.

Storytelling in music is unique as it etch a heavy footprint in the mind of listeners’ years after other music are fading away. Little wonder English singer, Adele’s 21 album became a tremendous success.  The album explored heartbreak and forgiveness, being a result of the breakdown of her relationship.

Besides storytelling in music, comedians all around the world have used nonfiction to crack the large audience. Basically every comedian in Nigeria does this. Rise of social media comedy was birthed through storytelling. This rise is still incessant amid the pandemic.

The peculiarity in any form of art is embedded in the contents it passes along. Everyone loves a good story, no matter the medium used. When next you decide to dish out that piece of information to a large audience: try storytelling rich in contents.
