The NIGERIAN Music industry is like a tertiary institution; with each new ‘semester’ we have new ‘students’ but in this case artistes and their managements alike.
Like every school, there are guidelines and scheme of works one has to scale through to be a certified A-list act with a reputable portfolio worthy of our attention and time. This year saw the rise and rise of new names and some a bit old but ever so eagerly reappearing on our fave top 10 lists and headlining the most shows.
Undoubtedly in my own opinion which I think should be the opinion of all music thinkers alike, Yemi Alade is hands down the biggest act of 2015, I will go on to defend this only because it is an article and should be well scripted; she headlined a successful international al tour and her rise has been steady and professional, putting forth singles, videos, endorsement deals, international deals and the likes. Not like her colleagues that count social media milestones as a success worthy of accolades and reputable claim, this songstress and her team indeed put in substantial work to her brand and we have also noted a couple new faces that might be wise enough to thread in her footsteps.
Below is a compilation of some of the break outs for 2015.
His style is slightly similar to Olamide, self-proclaimed Baddo. But the distinction is in his delivery.
Oludemilade Martin Alejo (born January 29, 1993) popularly known by his stage name YCEE is a rapper and songwriter who shot into limelight after one of his singles titled “Condo” which featured vocals from Patoranking won him two nominations at the 2015 Nigerian Entertainment Awards, he went on to release a new joint – JAGABAN, which upon release became a sort of National anthem further adding to his growing base; the song generated one of the highest buzz online and offline prompting Olamide to reach out requesting a remix of the said song. He was also nominated in the “Best Artist in African Pop” category at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards. He is currently signed to Tinny Entertainment.
- KISS DANIEL
A good artiste is one that can cause a movement, one that puts out a single and cuts across all age groups and target audience. Kiss Daniel did that with WOJU.
WOJU which enjoyed massive airplay in the early part of year 2015 shot Kiss Daniel into recognition with a record that most artistes envy. Virtually every countdown had “WOJU” and if it wasn’t there, then the countdown isn’t complete. Following up, Kiss Daniel dropped an alike sound – LAYE, which discredited the rumours he was a one hit wonder.
- ADEKUNLE GOLD
Indeed 2015 did witness new faces with golden tubes.
Adekunle Gold is blessed with the chords of an angel and he knows just how to put out crisp singles airy fresh and undiluted contents.
His debut single, albeit a cover to an international song shot him into limelight, he has followed up with other singles that are ever so fantastic.
Adekunle Kosoko, popularly known as Adekunle Gold, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and graphic designer. He describes his genre of music as urban highlife. In 2014, he released a song titled “Sade” which received massive airplays before he went on to release a single titled “Orente” which was also positively received among music critics. In 2015, he was nominated in the Most Promising Act of the Year category at the 2015 City People Entertainment Awards and was also nominated in the “Best Alternative Song” category at The Headies 2015 for his song titled “Sade”. He is currently signed to YBNL Nation and he is has been tagged with the moniker “YBNL Toaster”
I would love to hear her do a cover on an Adele song, simple because she has that clandestine quality.
She has been termed Nigeria’s Most Loved songbird. A very befitting title, with lovely singles up and down the air and videos to boot, her debut single Thief caught on like wildfire and since then all eyes has been on this songstress. As we await and watch her attain greater heights as the year wraps up. We wonder what does Simi have for us in 2016?
- Korede Bello
Bellovers! The young girls will not rest! His Jerry curls, his baby face. His crisp voice!
Korede Bello (born 29 February 1996) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter currently signed to Mavin Records. He is best known for his hit single “Godwin”, a semi-gospel and pop song which topped many music charts in Nigeria.
