By a series of well-measured toxic tweets, Mavin signee and award winning music artiste, Rema managed to create a memorable divide that threw social media into an opinion spin.

A few days ago, the world woke up to what can only be described as ‘Rants By Rema’, a bevy of tweets that covered everything from betrayal by friends, doubts cast at his career to criticism of his unique music style.

More than Rema’s strange social media rants that made everyone sit up and pay attention to the young artiste, the session showed a well-hidden side that artistes seldom show when trapped in the fast-paced glory of fame and stardom.

Their humanity.

Trapped inside every media-trained, well- behaved artiste is the need to be normal. To be an everyday person, who wears a two-day old boxer and an unwashed tee and smokes weed in the morning, teeth unbrushed and so on.

But no one wants that. Not the artiste manager or the PR rep or the record label itself. It’s bad for business they say.

Artistes are brands and so are expected to be well behaved in that respect; smiling for the camera, accepting selfies from total strangers and doing compulsory giveaways.

As an artiste, straying from the industry-accepted character traits makes you some kind of loose cannon. But the rules are different for regular people, unfairly tilted to accommodate certain eccentricities when it comes to non-superstars.

In the midst of their daily routines, it is acceptable that they have regular outbursts on social media and threaten a questionable Okada rider from time to time, but not for celebrities.

They should know better.

They are expected to be calm sometimes to the place of being senile and simply take everything in.

It isn’t surprising then when from time to time a celebrity loses their calm demeanour and goes on a directionless rant spree.

Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Burna Boy, Rema.

Need I go on?

So for all those who are on the side of criticizing the young creative Rema for his sudden unprofessional conduct on social media, imagine that the composed, well mannered version of you, who smiles at the bullshit of clients and colleagues alike everyday, from about 9 am to 5 pm without losing your cool. Imagine that you had to do all that fakery for 24 hours everyday for the rest of your life.

Just the very thought itself wants to make me go on a rant myself.
