Spotlight Act: Sunkanmi

Churning out single after single and not getting substantial recognition can be quite frustrating and even discourage an aspiring artist from pursuing their goal. But faith and determination is what takes you there while hard work and consistency keeps you there.

Olasunkanmi Rihanat Alonge is a Lagos Nigeria born and bred Afro-pop singer and graduate of Geo Physics from Olabisi Onabanjo University. Music for her dates back to primary school where she led cultural dance troops. Owing to her Muslim background, not having an opportunity to join a choir and the fact that no one around her sings, she likes to say music chose her. Initially, she saw herself as a regular “bathroom singer” and never identified it as a talent until her 2nd year in the university where she did lots of personal remixes to songs, pointing out flaws/errors and correcting them. Then at some point she followed her friend to a studio where she did a freestyle which in her opinion wasn’t bad at all. She had it burnt out and it officially became her first recording.

Growing up, she listened to the likes of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obe, Michael Jackson, Beyonce etc. and music from the aforementioned artists coupled with happenings around her inspired her sound. Her first single “Fabulous” was released in October 2013; and for her stage name, she opted for her birth name just so people can easily identify with her and get to know her for who she is.

Despite the negative feedback she got after posting “Fabulous” online, she was not deterred but went ahead to channel all the negative energy and convert it to something positive and carve a niche for herself by improving based on the negative comments. She officially has 7 singles and considers her 4th single “Singale” produced by Young John to be the song which shot her into the spotlight.

Sunkanmi (1)

She feels wonderful about how far she has come and accords it all to God. She thrives on the formula of leaving it all to God while doing what she knows how to do best. Her game plan is to “come for her spot” and be number 1 both locally and internationally. She believes in the principle of “work hard play hard” as she isn’t about all time 24/7 seriousness but strikes a balance between the two and even sees the need to play more.

People often assume she has an affiliation to YBNL Nation because she featured Olamide in her song “For Body” and has appeared in few of his videos; but she thinks of it more as a friendship especially since they have a common producer – Young John.  In terms of collaboration both home and abroad, she hopes to work with WizKid and Beyonce respectively some day.

Sunkanmi is a pretty and attractive lady and to maintain her glow, she uses honey as a natural therapy. She says she cannot be caught dead smoking in as much as people around her indulge in it and for video purposes; she can just act it out.

On her journey so far, she capitalizes on optimism, goodwill and open mindedness; and given an opportunity to effect change in the music industry, she will give higher airplay chances to females than males, and try to strike a balance between both sexes.tlight
