Rebirth of The Girls’ Gang; Meet The All Sister Group

For a new band, R-CUBE is a story worth sharing/telling. Two sisters and a cousin team up to show us what a kaleidoscope of genres will sound like; sounds like what a good band is made of.

Fairly new to the game, apart from their history with the 7th season of Project Fame West Africa, RCUBE consists of 3 young and beautiful ladies with a box of talent each ready to show the world what they have been prepping in the studio. Starting with their debut single, Show Dem’

We had a sit down with them, and they tell us about, music and R-CUBE…

*TELL US ABOUT R-CUBE.

Ruona: My name is Ruona; I am Ruby’s sister and Rubunu’s cousin.

Ruky: R-CUBE was formed after the Project Fame competition, the 7th edition. I came out as a runner up and Rubunu was a top finalist, so we decided to form a girl band and here we are today.

Rubunu: My name is Rubunu, after the Project Fame competition we decided to take up singing with as much seriousness as we could muster. I and Ruby were already involved and Ruona has always been selling us the idea of a girl band, I guess we finally bought it after our individual success in the Project Fame competition.

*YOUR FAMILY IS VERY MUSICALLY INCLINED, IS THAT SOMETHING THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE? OR IT JUST STARTED WITH YOU 3?

Ruona: Oh yes! It has always been there, our family members have always been into music, one way or the other.

Ruky: Yes our Dad (I and Ruona) plays the guitar.

Rubunu: My parents are missionaries, so music has always been there growing up.

*WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND LIKE?

Ruona: I studied Law at Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom; I graduated last year, June. I am about to go for Law School and then my NYSC.

Ruky: I studied Business Information System, at University of East London. I’m presently doing my NYSC.

Rubunu: I studied in Creative Landfield School, in Ghana, I did movie directing and film making.

*DO YOU HAVE ANY BIG PLANS FOR THE SUMMER?

Ruky: Yes yes, with the music, we plan to put out more videos. Just basically getting R-CUBE out there, let people know about us. That’s why we put up the website; we have our website up and running now, with our rehearsals on there, personal activities, make-up and everything R-CUBE.

Rubunu: We really don’t have individual plans or separate projects, it’s all intertwined and everything is about the music. We are focused on putting out our debut video, called; ‘Show Dem’. It is going to be out soon, audio and video simultaneously.

Ruona: Everything in relation to our music and personal affairs is on our website officialsrcube.com

*WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS?

Ruona: I love to socialize, the whole concept of being out there meeting new people. Also, I love coca-cola.

Ruky: I like to sing and dance, (obviously lol) I like to act. I have something against germs, beans, creatures that crawl on the wall, (argh)

*AS MUCH AS YOU ARE A UNIFIED GROUP, YOU SEEM TO HAVE 3 DISTINCT STYLES. TELL US ABOUT YOUR INDIVIDUAL STYLES.

Ruona: Presently, I am wearing the faux lock look, it’s a bit Neo Soul and on the naturalist path, I tried it out and got great responses, so it’s an image I am going to stick to now. Also I love the color black, it is my go to color. My style is pretty much laid back and very detailed.

Ruky: My style is borderline crazy, very edgy. I love to try out new things. I have pretty much tried out a ton load of colors on my hair. It’s not over the top crazy or unacceptable, I am a very hyper person, bubbly if I may add.

Rubunu: I like swimming, cooking, I am very creative when making things, and I paint. I am also very artsy and it is evident in my music.

*DO YOU PLAN ON PUTTING UP YOUR PERSONAL INTERESTS ON YOUR WEBSITE?

Rubunu: Oh yes, it is possible that we will explore that aspect.

Ruona: I and Rubunu are make-up artistes, we are commercial also. So yes, we will put up our works on the site for our fans to see. The main focus right now is the music, that’s the 1st, 2nd and 3rd interest!

*DESCRIBE YOUR TYPE OF MUSIC.

Ruky: Our type of music is a mixture of different sounds and genres, we like to mix. We are not in a box, we are overly versatile. Ruona does basically, reggae, soul, Patois, I am more Soul, RnB, Rubunu is Afro Jazz. It is a kaleidoscope of fusion.

*LET’S TALK SONGWRITING, HOW DOES THAT WORK? IN A GROUP OF 3 DISTINCT TALENTS; WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO, AS A GROUP?

Ruona: We vibe!

Ruky: We just get in sync as a group, we do research together, and that’s the advantage as a group,  three people come with three different train of thoughts and views on the song at hand.

Rubunu: Everything just flows naturally from there henceforth.

*SO WHAT IS WORKOUT LIKE FOR YOU GUYS? YOU ALL LOOK SO FIT.

(General Laughter)

Ruky, Rubunu, and Ruona: We’re GOOD!

*AS SISTERS, HOW OFTEN DO YOU GUYS SWAP FROM EACH OTHER’S WARDROBES?

Ruky: We like to complement each other’s style. And tone it down as much as we can, so we don’t come across as forced or rehearsed.

Rubunu: I like angelic tones, African prints, eccentric tones and just being earthy and natural.

*TELL US ABOUT THE EP COMING OUT SOON.

Ruky: We are working on putting out a body of work this year. Hopefully it gets a lot of rave, because we are putting a lot of energy into it. And it is going to blow minds.

*PRESENTLY, YOU ARE ABOUT TO PREMIERE A NEW SINGLE, ‘SHOW DEM’ WITH A VIDEO. RIGHT?

Ruky: Oh yes, our debut single, it is an uptown song that basically talks about what we have and it shows our versatility.

*AS THE ONLY KNOWN GIRL BAND IN NIGERIA, WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON DOING THAT WILL STAND YOU OUT?

(General laughter)

Rubunu: About to be known!

Ruky: Basically just extra work, cause the scrutiny will be intense. So we plan to work twice as hard.

Ruona: The difference is innate; when you listen to our music you definitely will feel it.

Rubunu: We have three different sounds that compliment each other, we are not just cut from the same genre, it is a fusion of different types of music that make beautiful body of works.

*WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW? WHAT IS ON YOUR PHONE, IN YOUR CAR?

Rubunu: Asa’s album and Wizkid!

Ruky: I’m listening to a lot of Praiz, SIA, Lana Del Ray and definitely Mary Mary.

Ruona: Just some Marley music, Brandy, Seyi Shay and Cynthia Morgan.

*DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURISTIC FEATURES; ARTISTES YOU WOULD LOVE TO FEATURE ON AN R-CUBE SONG?

Ruona: Runtown.

Ruky: Eva.

Rubunu: Wizkid.

*AS BEAUTIFUL YOUNG GIRLS, WHATS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE IN A GUY?

(General Laughter)

Ruona: the shape of head! It is very peculiar to me. (Lol)

Ruky: I agree with shape of head and his dentition.

Rubunu: For me it is his eyes and his nails.

*HOW MUCH HAVE YOU MADE THIS MONTH?

Ruky: Hmm we are at a phase in our career where we invest more into the craft, we are really thankful for the path God has put us on, experiencing miracles here and there.

Ruona: We haven’t really made much right now. It’s invest time and we doing as much to invest back into the music.

WHEN YOU GET YOUR FIRST BIG CHEQUE OR YOUR FIRST BIG ENDORSEMENT DEAL, WHO IS YOUR FIRST PHONECALL?

Rubunu: Definitely my Mum, then she will start singing; ‘Miracles, oh Miracles’ that’s her favorite song when something big happens so we will sing it together, then I will gist her.

Ruky: Definitely my parents!
