“If knowledge is withheld from the public; humanity is doomed to repeat the mistakes of its past”.
Hearing about different atrocities and crime committed against humanity, one tends to question the true worth of humanity. The world of today is a place where minds dominates hearts. People are becoming competitive, everyone wants to climb and reach the pinnacle one way or another. Infidelity, hedonism, greed, being over-ambitious is becoming very common each day. Observing all these may lead to a person believing that humanity no longer exist in today’s world.
Humanity simply means the quality of being human; the peculiar nature of man, by which he is distinguished from other beings. Being human does not mean that individual possess humanity. Humanity means caring for and helping others whenever and wherever possible. Humanity means forgetting your selfish interest at times when others need your help. In the big marathon we run called “life”, we forget to cherish the little things. We don’t truly recognize what the people in our lives are going through at any moment in time.
I still believe that humanity exist as long as people pray for the right things. If two friends can put aside their ego and strengthen their bond, I see humanity there. If a married couple can put aside their ego and figure out how their marriage can work well, I see humanity there. If a man can reconcile with God and come back to him, I believe humanity exist there. This is why we owe it to each other to treat others with utmost level of respect, compassion and empathy that we are capable of.
The story of a 35 year old man who jumped into the lagoon was the talk of the town some months ago. From my research, he was a doctor, had a car and even a driver. From the Nigerian standard, we can rate him as a successful young man at his age. There must have been some of his secondary school mates including his university mates who were envying him, but the truth must be told no one knew what he was actually going through. It is easy to say that it was depression that lead him to take a bad turn, as we keep progressing in time, we keep getting reports of different attempted suicide and no one seems to be moved by these events.
Throughout history, censorship has been used to control and manipulate people. If used today, it will be the downfall of humanity because this amount of censorship has caused the people to suffer physically and mentally by depriving them of basic knowledge, when this occur it leaves people ignorant to things that they are not familiar with, thus causing panic, fear and violence towards new ideas or beliefs. If knowledge is withheld from the public; humanity is doomed to repeat the mistakes of its past.
As the introductory part of the Nigerian constitution states “We the people of the federal republic of Nigeria, having firmly and solemnly resolve to live in unity and harmony as one indivisible and indissoluble sovereign nation under God”. We have another chance to learn from our mistakes of the past and build a better world.
A companion in times of trial and tribulation can make the most devastating of tragedies bearable. A shoulder to lean on or a hand to hold when we stumble allows us to regain our balance, strength and bearing even if it just for a moment. Remember, humanitarian activities should never be performed in order to achieve fame or to gain status symbols. You can easily achieve fame by the work you do. Lifting the heavy bag of an old woman is humanity, helping a disabled to cross the road is humanity.
In conclusion, without love and support of others, it would be easy to feel isolated and angry at the world with no reprieve in sight but there is solace in the goodness of human nature. It is there, present and persistent, it is also tangible and enduring and for these reasons, I believe and will always believe in humanity.
