I took a long break off social media and came back online to see everyone ranting about a new Instagram update that required one to scroll horizontally. Turned out the update was a mistake and Instagram took it down immediately (meaning that I did not get to see it) but I did get to see an amazing new update – IGTV; Instagram television.
IGTV allows users to upload videos that are up to an hour long to Instagram, that’s aside the shorter clips you can do normally or on your Instagram stories. IGTV is an app on its own but also exists in the original Instagram app; you can access the videos on IGTV using the newly added tab placed at the top right corner of your app.
Apart from the fact that you can now upload videos that are about 60 mins long, what’s special about IGTV? IGTV has content discovery tools that allow users to watch trending videos that they like based on their interests or videos published by brands or people they follow. Viewers can also like, comment and even subscribe. Also, IGTV has been designed for the mobile experience. Unlike YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, IGTV automatically takes advantage of full resolution of our seemingly ever growing smartphone screens.
Rumours abound that there are plans to monetize IGTV but before this is even done, there are many ways your brand can take advantage of this platform; there are many ways your brand can benefit. Already, Instagram boasts of a whopping 800 million active users as at 2018 and your customers are amongst that number.
First, IGTV is new and people like novelty. Your brand can take advantage of the fact that people like new shiny things and want to be among the first to try it out. What does this mean? It means you have an already waiting, ready and eager audience. Quick tip: Don’t forget that first impressions matter!
With IGTV, you don’t have to work so hard to build an audience. Your audience will be the people who already follow you. So, because they already follow you they will see your IGTV content. Then, you can simply focus on creating killer content and driving traffic to your sites.
IGTV allows you to upload videos up to one hour long, this gives you the opportunity to show better and in-depth content. You can conduct interviews, show the day-to-day work involved in your business, documentaries how-to/tutorial videos, commentaries, etc. to get people to associate a wide plethora of feelings with your brand.
We are excited to see you try IGTV, but don’t let it take the place of regular Instagram posts and videos.
