From the sound of kisses, to the chirp of birds; from the sound of feet stomping the ground, to all the wind does in concert with tree leaves; from the adorable vocals of humans, to the instruments we play; from the vibrations of instruments of war, to the cries of those who mourn; from the sweet communication between the hearts of two lovers, to the “sounds” from the perfect alignment of beautiful entities in our galaxies, we can boldly say: music is carefully factored into every bit of creation; music is an invaluable, unavoidable component of our existence.
Plato did not mince words when he said “music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
Over many centuries, humankind has achieved a whole lot by working deliberately to tap into the humongous energy sourced from the appreciation of music. When there is perfect harmony of divergent sounds and words, the human mind finds wings with which imaginations take flights, either to beautiful or very dark places.
Humans can barely live finely without music; little wonder, the legendary Michael Jackson said: “…to live is to be musical, starting with the blood dancing in your veins. Everything living has a rhythm.”
The capacity of music to wield such great influence is seen in the manner through which it shapes societies. Music directs actions on divergent fronts. In fact, Bono rightly said: “…music can change the world because it can change people.” Surely, such change could either be positive or negative, depending on the kind of energy transmitted by a particular song, rhythm or artist.
Owing to the invaluable nature of music, musicians have always been held in high esteem from time immemorial. By virtue of their art, they go a long way when it comes to dictating trends along lines of fashion, social views and even language per time. Brands and labels ensure they identify with music stars as ambassadors, so as to shine the light of their businesses in the eyes of members of the society, in order that they may gain patronage in return. More often than not, this works, as a result of the high esteem accorded musicians, on account of their art and the messages they communicate to the human soul.
In our world today where all forms of violence, chaos and disunity is prevalent, humankind can make deliberate efforts towards curbing these menaces, via the instrumentality of music. Musicians have very important roles to play, in order that our world may be saved from the grave she is being forced into.
Far beyond the goal of entertainment and yielding returns, Musicians must be deliberate about propagating messages of unity, peace and justice; knowing well that the words that accompany the melodies they produce can turn everything around for good.
